What is Purification?
Why are some people kinder, more generous, and more compassionate than others? How do some people seemingly handle stress with ease and grace? Why are some people less materialistic and more spiritually attuned than others? Except for rare cases where they were born that way, it was most likely because of efforts that they made. Simply put, the spiritual purification process is about evolving into a better human being. Anyone can learn to do it.
Spiritual purification consists of introspection and increasing self-awareness. It is to objectively come to terms with our shortcomings, habits, likes and dislikes, fears, and in fact, our entire belief system. It is to put into question our ego structure, or the core of who we believe we are. Many people are willing to join a house of worship, perform rituals, read scriptures, do charity work and such, which are all activities that are gratifying to the ego, but they selectively choose to avoid this important part of the process. One reason is because it can be brutally painful at times.
Helpful Practices
Everyone is in the process of evolution, whether they realize it or not. We can sit back and let the process unfold on its own, or we can take responsibility for our own evolution. Many practices exist that can help with our purification process. Here are a few examples:
1. Meditation: Regular meditation helps quiet the mind, allowing for self-reflection and a deeper understanding of one’s thoughts and emotions.
2. Journaling: Writing down feelings, experiences, and thoughts can provide clarity and insight into patterns of behavior and emotional triggers.
3. Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness in daily activities cultivates awareness of the present moment, reducing judgment and fostering acceptance.
4. Forgiveness: Letting go of grudges and forgiving oneself and others can release emotional burdens and promote healing.
5. Connecting with Nature: Spending time in nature can ground us, helping to reconnect with our true selves and the world around us.
6. Healthy Living: Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising, and ensuring adequate rest can positively impact mental and spiritual well-being.
7. Seeking Guidance: Consulting with spiritual leaders, therapists, or mentors can provide support and perspective in our personal journey.
8. Joining a Community: Belonging to a community of spiritual seekers can help us set the correct intention, remain focused, and offer support and insight to one another.
Enjoy the Journey
Spiritual purification is a lifelong journey. Sometimes we will fall flat on our faces and become frustrated or discouraged. We must remind ourselves to keep going, as that is part of the process. By committing to such practices on a long-term basis, we can gradually begin to overcome our inner demons. The result is a more profound sense of peace, clarity, and happiness.
Bon voyage!

Great article. Especially like #2 (which I do daily) and #5 (which I try to do more of). More people need to get with the program!
I do 1, 3, 4, 5 and 8, or at least try to. Forgiving is the hardest, I think. Especially forgiving ourselves.

Thank you for this article. I always have to remind myself when going into hate, greed, or blame mode, that I am a work in progress. It is important to be kind to others, but it is also important to be kind to ourselves.
